P0016 – Crank Angle Sensor-Camshaft Position Sensor Phase Problem MMC L200 IV

FUNCTION

  • The engine-ECU monitors the signals input from the crank angle sensor and camshaft position sensor.
  • The engine-ECU compares these input pulse signals to check the position relations for validity.

  • TROUBLE JUDGMENT

  • Battery positive voltage is 8 – 16 V
  • One of the following two is true.
  • 2 seconds have passed after the ignition switch is turned on, the crank angle sensor and camshaft position sensor output signals are normal, and the engine rotation speed is 1,200 r/min or lower.
  • Cranking is in progress, the engine rotation speed is 350 r/min or faster, and the engine coolant temperature is -30°C or higher.
  • The phase shift angle between the crank and camshaft position sensor signals exceeds its threshold value.

  • PROBABLE CAUSES

  • Failed crank angle sensor
  • Failed camshaft position sensor
  • Failed timing chain
  • Failed engine-ECU

  • DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

    STEP 1. M.U.T.-III diagnosis code.

    Q. Is any other diagnosis code than P0016 set?

    STEP 2. Check the timing chain.

  • See the timing marks to check for skipped gear teeth.
  • Q. Is the check result normal?

    STEP 3. Check crankshaft sensing vane.

    Q. Is the check result normal?

    STEP 4. Check camshaft sensing vane.

    Q. Is the check result normal?

    STEP 5. M.U.T.-III diagnosis code.

  • After clearing the diagnosis code through M.U.T.-III, start the engine and confirm whether the diagnosis code is set.
  • Q. Is the diagnosis code set?
